Pinhoti Trail

Length: 335 miles.

Links to: Appalachian Trail via Benton McKaye Trail

Southern Terminus: Flagg Mt near Sylacauga, AL
Northern Terminus: Benton McKaye Trail Chattahoochee NF, Georgia

Billed as a link in the Eastern Continental Trail this can truly be considered the southern extension of the Appalachian Trail. Except for one highway crossing the Alabama section is all off road and the Georgia section is a wild and rugged trip through the Chattahoochee National Forest. Ridgeline hiking, Alabama's highest mountain, shelters in the northern half of Alabama. I LOVE THIS TRAIL!!!

Allegheny Trail

Southern Terminus: Junction with AT, Peters Mt
Northern Terminus: Mason Dixon Line near Bruceton Mills
Length: 330 Miles

West Virginia's long distance trail inspired by and connected to the Appalachian Trail. It's not as well conceived or maintained as the AT despite attempts to lure more traffic. North of Blackwater Falls State Park it's all dirt roads and there's a 20-mile gap between the main section and the link to the AT for which you will need to arrange transportation. There are lots of steep climbs and few good views.

The one really stunning view is from the Hanging Rock Raptor Migration Observatory. Its commanding views of the surrounding ridges and a tower that is only staffed in the fall and makes an ideal place to spend the night. Hike in from Peters Mt on the Appalachian Trail and arrange for a ride to White Sulphur Springs and the Amtrak station.

Appalachian Trail

LOOOOOOONG (2,174.6 miles). It took me 5 months.
You don't just hike it, you LIVE it.

Starts: Springer Mt, North Georgia
Ends: Katahdin, Central Maine

Transportation to trailheads is relatively easy as assisting AT hikers is something of a cottage industry in towns near the trail.

Guidebook: The only one you really need is the Thru-Hikers Companion published by ALDHA (Appalachian Long Distance Hikers Association). Although there are no trail maps it has everything you need to plan and execute your hike

Although it's the least scenic of the three Triple-Crown trails, it's easily the most conducive to building a hiker community and its regularly spaced shelters and towns make it an excellent introduction to long distance backpacking.
