Southern Terminus: Junction with AT, Peters Mt
Northern Terminus: Mason Dixon Line near Bruceton Mills
Length: 330 Miles
West Virginia's long distance trail inspired by and connected to the Appalachian Trail. It's not as well conceived or maintained as the AT despite attempts to lure more traffic. North of Blackwater Falls State Park it's all dirt roads and there's a 20-mile gap between the main section and the link to the AT for which you will need to arrange transportation. There are lots of steep climbs and few good views.
The one really stunning view is from the Hanging Rock Raptor Migration Observatory. Its commanding views of the surrounding ridges and a tower that is only staffed in the fall and makes an ideal place to spend the night. Hike in from Peters Mt on the Appalachian Trail and arrange for a ride to White Sulphur Springs and the Amtrak station.
